Uma língua pode ser falada, sussurrada ou assoviada? Uma língua sem palavras específicas para cores ou números? Segundo o linguista americano Daniel Everett, a língua Pirahã é exatamente assim. Há mais de 30 anos, ainda um missionário, ele adentrou a Floresta Amazônica para catequizar esse grupo indígena. Foram eles, entretanto, que o transformaram. Seu modo de vida e forma singular de comunicação mudaram tudo na vida de Everett, e inspiraram ideias que podem abalar as bases da linguística e questionar um dos cientistas mais respeitados de todos os tempos.

Linguistics professor Daniel Everett claims that the unique language of the Piraha people of the Amazon is exactly that. More than 30 years ago, he traveled as a missionary into the amazon rainforest to teach the tribe, but they ended up teaching him. Their way of life and unique form of communication have profoundly changed Everett, and inspired a theory that could undermine the most powerful theory (or theorist) of linguistics.
